Siliguri is a major metropolitan city spanned across the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts in the Indian state of West Bengal. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of the Mahananda and Balasan rivers, Siliguri is the third-largest city in West Bengal, after Kolkata and Asansol.
Known as the “Gateway of Northeast India”, the city occupies a highly strategic geographical position, connecting the mainland of India with the seven northeastern states, and bordering four international countries: Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and China (via Tibet).

The Siliguri Corridor (Chicken’s Neck)
Geopolitically, Siliguri lies at the heart of the Siliguri Corridor, a narrow strip of land approximately 22 kilometers (14 mi) wide that connects India’s northeastern states to the rest of the country. Bordered by Nepal to the west and Bangladesh to the south, this corridor is of immense strategic and military significance to the Republic of India, serving as a vital defensive bottleneck.

While Siliguri is primarily a transit hub, it offers several key tourist spots:
- Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary: Located in the foothills of the Himalayas just north of the city, hosting diverse wildlife including wild elephants, tigers, Indian bison (gaur), and rare birds.
- Bengal Safari Park: A specialized open-air park offering tiger safaris, leopard safaris, and herbivore safaris.
- Sevoke Kali Mandir & Coronation Bridge: Located 20 km from the city where the Teesta River enters the plains, featuring a historic cantilever bridge built in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI.
