Senco Gold & Diamonds (officially Senco Gold Limited) is a prominent Indian jewelry retailer headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Established in 1938, the company has grown to become one of the largest jewelry retailers in Eastern India, with over 150 showrooms across the country. It is particularly celebrated for preserving and promoting the traditional, intricate handcrafted jewelry style of Bengal, famously executed by local karigars (artisans).
History and Origins
The roots of the company date back to 1938 when it was founded in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) in British India by Sri Senco. Following the partition of India, the family relocated to Calcutta (now Kolkata) and restarted their gold manufacturing and retail operations.
In 1994, the company was formally re-incorporated as Senco Gold Private Limited under the leadership of the late Sankar Sen, who shifted the company’s focus from wholesale manufacturing to modern retail outlets. Under his vision, Senco gold pioneered the concept of “lightweight gold jewelry,” which made premium gold ornaments affordable and trendy for everyday wear.
Craftsmanship and Artistry
Bengal is historically renowned for its unique jewelry-making heritage:
- Filigree and Rawa Work: Intricate wire-mesh and dot designs that require immense precision.
- Bengali Karigars: Artisans who specialize in shaping gold sheets into paper-thin, detailed ornaments.
- Swarnalata Collections: Inspired by nature, featuring leaf and floral motifs.
Senco Gold continues to employ thousands of Bengali artisans, keeping the centuries-old traditional jewelry crafts alive.
Milestones & Expansion
In July 2023, Senco Gold Limited successfully launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), receiving an overwhelming subscription response. Today, the company has expanded beyond Bengal to major Indian metros, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary, modern diamond and platinum designs.
